Are you new to Phuket and/or want to meet other women? Make some new friends, find support and get involved in the social and business working to provide opportunities for the underprivileged in Phuket.
The Phuket International Women's Club (PIWC) is a non-profit organisation that assists in providing educational opportunities through charities and fund raising and is a social network amongst international and Thai women to provide friendship and support. Members represent more than 20 countries from around the world.
Activities include: a 'meet-and-greet' coffee for newcomers; fund-raising lunch at a different restaurant each month; fund-raising coffee morning hosted by a member, in her home; Mahjong, bridge, tennis, golf, cooking and gardening activities; annual fund-raising event in November.
PIWC has been sponsoring education almost since its inception in 1989 with more than 550 scholarship granted to girls and to some boys at all levels of public schooling raising money for youths who would otherwise not be able to attend school and perhaps face poorly paid jobs. As of 2009, 250 students were receiving aid from the club. Scholarships are awarded for youngsters for primary schooling through university with fund's set aside for the duration of the student's schooling years.
