The early expatriate ‘settlers’ arrived on Phuket as young travellers 25-30 years ago – and stayed. Asia’s equivalent of the ‘Lotus Eaters’, they worked and lived like the local population. Many remain to this day, as a reminder of different times.
Today’s expats, by contrast, live much the way they did before settling here – but with the bonus of living full time where others can only take a vacation. They come for the vast range of properties to choose from, an infrastructure that safeguards health and education for the family, a mature social network and an efficient business/work environment as well as things to do, the delicious Thai food and various types of restaurants.
