The Good Shepherd Phuket
Phuket
The Good Shepherd Phuket is a Phuket-based foundation that offers social services to underprivileged persons. The organisation works directly with women, children and families to support self-sufficiency and empower them. Services are offered irrespective of race and religion.
There are four locations at which volunteers work out of:
1. The Vocational Training Center in Patong
The centre provides English, hairdressing, computer and massage courses so girls and women can improve their education and earn a better living than working in the trades, espeically in Patong.
Classes are held Monday through Friday from 9am to noon and 1 to 4pm.
2. 'Home of Hope' in Topland
Located in Phuket City, the home accommodates poor migrant pregnant girls and women providing a safe and clean place during their pregnancy, delivery and post natal care. Migrant women otherwise would more likely give birth in construction camps in unclean conditions and with no medical assistance.
The center in Phuket Town accommodates poor girls and women, giving them a safe and clean environment throughout their pregnancy, delivery and sees them through to post natal care. Periodically, up to 15 girls stay at anyone time.
3. Human Trafficking Center
The center is a safe home provides shelter for anti human trafficking victims, including children many who have suffered extreme sexual and physical abuse under tremendously inhumane conditions. These people receive care, support, counseling and in time an education.
4. School at the Fishing Port
The school was established in late 2010 in a scant shelter and constained little facilities and materials - no tables or chairs, only a black board and a committed teacher. In the beginning there were 20 children from ages from 2 to 14 and none had ever had any formal schooling prior. Class sizes have increased and there are more on the wait list.
