This Chinese festival originated several hundreds of years ago when some Chinese opera group performers fell ill with malaria. The idea of the nine-day event which starts on the first day of the lunar month and runs, is to abstain from meat and other acts in order to obtain good health and purify the mind and body and honour the Nine Emperor Gods. The members of the opera troupe survived and the festival has become a spectacular annual event. Various ceremonies are performed with some believers performing firewalking and body piercing, acts of self-mortification. Observers can watch the early morning processions, which are spectacular and often gruesome. Participants in the processions who have entered a trance puncture their cheeks with various objects including knives, skewers and other items. They believe the Gods will protect them from harm.
